Good day chess fans. Today I want to talk about good chess openings playable for White.
As a chess player, chess opening choice is crucial. Playing a good opening can result in more wins and playing a bad opening can lead to weaker results. Therefor opening choice is crucial. Here's the top 5 chess openings for White determined by statistics. These are the most successful openings for white with a high victory for the side of white :)


5. Ponziani Opening - 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3

Though this opening looks dubious from the naked eye, it can produce a solid position for white. There is also many traps Black can fall into and the natural moves for Black can often lead to trouble. This opening is also not played that much, although Magnus Carlsen played it with success at the recent Tata Steel Chess Tournament. There is also a book titled "Play the Ponziani" which covers EVERYTHING off it. I have ordered it online and can't wait to receive it in about two weeks:)

Here are the statistics - How does this work? Basically, they took all games in the database which contains the certain opening and calculated the X percentage of games won by White, Black and Draw.

White - 41%
Black - 29%
Draw - 30%

4. Ruy Lopez ( Spanish Opening ) - 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5

This opening needs no introduction. Lots of grandmasters have played this opening with success, and I would recommend every chess player to take the time to learn this opening, and a few lines. This opening can lead to wild tactical variations or more of a strategic game or even a quick checkmate if Black goes wrong.

White - 40%
Black - 27%
Draw - 33%

3. Kings Indian Attack

This Opening is characterised by :

1. Fianchettoed bishop on g2.
2. Pawns on h2, g3 and f2.
3. Knights on f3 and d2.
4. Pawns on e4 and d3.

Therefor this position can arise from many different variations and move orders.
As one might suspect, the middlegame that would follow is a closed strategic game that could easily lead to tactical chances for both sides and well constructed sacrifices and mating nets.
This opening was played with success by Bobby Fischer.

Draw - 40%

2. English Opening 1.c4

This flank opening is the fourth most played chess opening. Basically white tries to take control over d5 from the flank. This opening can lead to many variations and systems and was made famous by unofficial world champion, Howard Stauton.

Yes, you've guessed it. It's one of the most played openings and played with success by many grandmasters. This opening can lead to tactical positions where White usually has an edge. It also includes many traps that black can fall into with the accepted variation.
